Blake Kuhn

Winemaker Vision

Blake is a native Californian, graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in biology and environmental sciences; and continued his wine education at UC Davis. Starting in the wine industry as a grape sampler in the vineyard, Blake learned and worked his way up as a lab tech, assistant winemaker, and senior winemaker when he came to Clayhouse in 2011, returning to his Central Coast roots. Today, Blake is Regional Winemaking Director, Central Coast, for Vintage Wine Estates. Blake crafts wines that are food friendly and fun. He is a committed environmentalist, leading sustainability efforts at the winery, including harvesting certified sustainable grapes, water reclamation from the winery for irrigation, waste management through composting, and using French oak barrels from government-managed sustainable forests.

Terroir

The Paso Robles AVA is centrally located between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California’s Central Coast. Paso Robles enjoys a long growing season and a wide diurnal range (temperature swing from day to night) that helps ripen grapes with rich character while ensuring that lively acidity is retained. Diverse soils and a variety of microclimates within Paso Robles ensure that this region is no one-trick pony.

About

Purple Cowboy wines are inspired by the western community and culture. The award-winning wines are sourced from Paso Robles, California, which is known as “Cowboy Wine Country”. Purple Cowboy is honoured to support Tough Enough To Wear Pink, the western community’s grassroots effort to fight breast cancer. Since 2004, 100% of the profits from the sales of Purple Cowboy wines have helped raise over $35 million dollars to support families facing breast cancer, early detection, and research across the U.S. and Canada.
