Winery Profile: The Auction Crossing

The name, Auction Crossing, tells the story. Built on a farm called Vendutie, the Dutch word for auction, the estate winery was once the site, 200 years ago where livestock were sold. And if you’re coming to visit the famr you will make your way across a railway line, as well as the Hex River, to get to the auction site, the same waay settleers used to cross the river on their way north. So, when you taste a wine from Auction Crossing, you’re tasting history.

Now producing only two wines, a Syrah/Viognier blend and a Viognier, Auction Crossing has been awarded 4 stars for both wines by John Platter, South Africa’s authoritative wine writer.

The Portfolio:

"Made in the style of some Côte Rôtie, a percentage of Viognier gAuction Crossing Syrah Viognierrapes are macerated with the Syrah. Black cherry is very much in evidence, enlivened by pepper and spice. The rounded ripe tannins ensure that the mid palate is lush, packed with powerful fruit. The Viognier shows towards the back and this combined with a red fruit influence lightens and lengthens the finish." Derek Smedley, Master of Wine, 8th February 2008

Auction Crossing Viognier

"Very classic Viognier on the nose, the white peach is backed by aromatic flowers, lush but  vibrant. Lots of richness on the palate, the peach fruit fleshed out by some mouth filling apricot, the freshness on the mid-palate balances the sweetness and the oak is very restrained." Derek
